Update on Victoria Bushfires

Australasia | Australia
vrs ANA

More than 1,800 homes were destroyed and 7,500 people displaced by the hundreds of fires that swept the State of Victoria. The fires razed 450,000 hectares (1.1 million acres) of land. vrs Freemans have 5 zones of operation covered by 7 branches and 20 Adjusters on the ground.

The vrs Freemans CAT Team are still unable to attend many loss sites due to access issues such as road blocks and fires that are still out of control. Due to access problems and trauma of event, the CAT team do not expect our Adjusters to be able to inspect more than 3 to 4 properties per day (total loss) and even less for some rural properties. vrs freemans may not be able to access Marysville for a month as it is a crime scene with 20% of the population killed.

Insurers expect that there is still a large number of claims for large losses not lodged.  CGU have been issuing newspaper ads urging customers to lodge their claims and promoting cover and immediate payment of $5,000.

A few Insurers now want to cash settle contents claims immediately. The Australian Premier announced that he will be pushing for fire proof constructions which may add $20,000 plus to average rebuild.  Makes it difficult to propose cash pay outs when extra costs may occur later down the track.
